Background & Context:

Prior to the implementation of the Wenabo WASH Project, the community faced significant challenges related to water access and sanitation. Residents of the Wenabo area in the Gumer Wereda relied on distant and contaminated water sources for their drinking water needs. This posed serious health risks, as the water was unfit for consumption under normal circumstances, leading to waterborne diseases and other health issues. Additionally, community members had to travel over 5 kilometers to fetch water, resulting in a round trip of over 10 kilometers. This journey was not only time-consuming but also hazardous, as it exposed them to risks such as attacks from hyenas, endangering both their safety and that of their livestock.

Objectives:

  • Improve access to clean and safe water sources.
  • Enhance sanitation and hygiene practices in the community.
  • Empower local residents to manage and sustain water resources.

Implementation:

Necati Erelli generously funded the Wenabo WASH Project, providing 347,000 ETB to support its implementation. The project employed a community-based approach, actively involving local residents in various aspects of the project, including labor, transportation of materials, security, excavation, and backfill. This collaborative effort ensured the efficient execution of the project and fostered a sense of ownership among community members.

Impact:

The successful completion of the Wenabo WASH Project marked a significant achievement in addressing water and sanitation challenges within the community. With the establishment of three water points, a 3.5-kilometer distribution water line, and the installation of four latrines, residents now have access to clean and safe drinking water, reducing their vulnerability to waterborne diseases and improving overall health outcomes. Additionally, the project directly benefited over 3000 individuals in the community and contributed to the promotion of sanitation practices, further enhancing the well-being of the community.

Collaborative Contributions:

Necati Erelli’s generous donation played a pivotal role in the successful implementation of the Wenabo WASH Project. Their partnership with our organization and local stakeholders ensured that resources were effectively utilized to achieve project objectives. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of partnerships in driving positive change and sustainable development.
