Background & Context:

The Gebaba WASH Project, initiated in 2011, aimed to address the pressing need for clean water and improved sanitation in Gebaba kebele, located in the Silte Zone of the Cetral Ethiopia Region. Lack of access to clean water sources and inadequate sanitation facilities posed significant health risks to the local community, making this project essential for enhancing their well-being.

Objectives:

  • Improve access to clean and safe water sources.
  • Enhance sanitation and hygiene practices in the community.
  • Empower local residents to manage and sustain water resources.

Implementation:

The implementation of the Gebaba WASH Project involved a comprehensive approach, including the construction of three hand-dug wells to provide reliable access to clean water. Additionally, sanitation facilities were improved through the construction of latrines, promoting better hygiene practices within the community. Training sessions were conducted to educate community members on proper water management and sanitation practices, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the project’s impact.

Impact:

The Gebaba WASH Project successfully achieved its objectives, significantly improving access to clean water and sanitation facilities for the residents of Gebaba kebele. The construction of three hand-dug wells and the improvement of sanitation facilities have had a positive impact on the health and well-being of the community, reducing waterborne diseases and improving overall quality of life.

The Gebaba WASH Project was made possible through the generous support of Ethio-gulf, who provided the necessary funding for project implementation. Additionally, the active participation and contributions of the local community, estimated at 20,000 ETB, played a crucial role in the success of the project. Their involvement demonstrated a strong commitment to improving their living conditions and ensuring the sustainability of the project’s outcomes.
