Background & Context:

Before the initiation of the Fonko WASH Project in 2012, the community of North Fonko kebele, located in the Hadiya Zone of the CER region, faced dire challenges related to water access and quality. Residents were compelled to travel long distances to fetch water from distant and contaminated sources, posing significant health risks due to the poor quality of the water. The prevailing conditions underscored the urgent need for intervention to provide the community with access to clean and safe drinking water within their vicinity.

Objectives:

  • To address the acute water scarcity and contamination issues in North Fonko kebele by constructing three hand-dug wells, ensuring reliable access to clean and potable water for the residents.
  • Improve the health and well-being of community members by eliminating their dependence on unsafe water sources, thereby reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases and related health complications.
  • Foster community engagement and ownership by actively involving local residents in all stages of the project, from planning and implementation to maintenance and sustainability measures.

Implementation:

The Fonko WASH Project entailed the construction of three hand-dug wells strategically located within North Fonko kebele, utilizing local resources and labor. Alongside the infrastructure development, the project incorporated educational initiatives aimed at promoting proper hygiene and sanitation practices among community members, further enhancing the project’s impact and sustainability.

Impact:

  • Successful completion of three hand-dug wells, benefiting approximately 750 individuals residing in North Fonko kebele by providing them with reliable access to clean and safe drinking water.
