Before the initiation of the Fonko WASH Project in 2012, the community of North Fonko kebele, located in the Hadiya Zone of the CER region, faced dire challenges related to water access and quality. Residents were compelled to travel long distances to fetch water from distant and contaminated sources, posing significant health risks due to the poor quality of the water. The prevailing conditions underscored the urgent need for intervention to provide the community with access to clean and safe drinking water within their vicinity.
The Fonko WASH Project entailed the construction of three hand-dug wells strategically located within North Fonko kebele, utilizing local resources and labor. Alongside the infrastructure development, the project incorporated educational initiatives aimed at promoting proper hygiene and sanitation practices among community members, further enhancing the project’s impact and sustainability.
The Fonko WASH Project was made possible through the generous support of Necati Erelli, who provided the necessary funding for project implementation.
And ctive participation from the community, with an estimated contribution of 46,000 ETB towards labor, unloading, transportation of materials, and security, underscoring their commitment to the project’s success and sustainability.
