Project Overview:

The Eli Wiha WASH Project was launched to address the severe water shortage in the arid region of Eli Wiha Kebele in Afar. Prior to the project, residents were walking long distances to access unprotected and unsafe water sources — sometimes shared with animals. This created a significant burden on women and children and exposed the community to serious health risks.

Objectives:

  • Provide a sustainable and clean water source for over 250 residents.
  • Minimize the occurrence of waterborne illnesses.
  • Build local ownership through community involvement and training.

Implementation:

The project included the construction of a single hand-dug well, designed based on a localized feasibility study. Volunteers from Give Water traveled to the area to help identify the best site and engage the community in planning. Local residents supported the construction by providing labor and securing the project site, contributing ETB 15,000 in value.

Impact:

  • Clean and reliable water access for 250+ people.
  • Reduction in time spent fetching water, especially for women and children.
  • Improved public health and hygiene conditions in the community

Collaborative Contributions:

This initiative was funded by Ethio-Gulf and implemented by Give Water with support from community members. Volunteers played a key role in assessment and supervision, while local residents ensured smooth execution through their active participation and labor contributions.
