Background & Context:

The Danicho WASH Project was Give Water’s first ever initiative, launched in 2010 in Silte Woreda, Danicho and Arat Ber Kebeles, in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR). At the time, the local community had no nearby access to clean water, forcing residents—especially women and children—to walk long distances to collect water from unsafe sources, posing significant health and safety risks.

Objectives:

  • Improve access to clean and safe water sources.
  • Enhance sanitation and hygiene practices in the community.
  • Empower local residents to manage and sustain water resources.

Implementation:

The project involved constructing three hand-dug wells and delivering training on sustainability and community-based water management. Implementation was done in close coordination with local authorities and community leaders, and supported by Ethio-Gulf.

Impact:

  • Access to Clean Water: 750 individuals now have direct access to clean, safe drinking water.
  • Community Empowerment: Residents were trained in water point maintenance and hygiene practices.
  • Health Benefits: Reduced waterborne diseases due to improved water quality.

Collaborative Contributions:

The project was made possible through strong local collaboration. Ethio-Gulf funded the core infrastructure (81,000 ETB), while the Silte Zone Water Office donated three hand pumps valued at 30,000 ETB. Community members contributed labor and support, reflecting local ownership and participation. Total project cost reached 111,000 ETB.
