Project Overview:

The Meskan WASH Project (2011) was a critical intervention designed to improve access to clean and safe water for the residents of Welensho II Kebele, a rural community facing chronic water shortages. Prior to the implementation of this project, community members—especially women and children—had to walk long distances to fetch water from unsafe and unreliable sources, exposing them to waterborne illnesses and physical hardship.

Objectives:

  • Ensure reliable access to safe drinking water for 750 individuals.
  • Reduce waterborne diseases through improved water quality.
  • Alleviate the burden of water collection, especially for women and children, allowing more time for education and productive activities.

Implementation:

Give Water constructed three hand-dug wells, each carefully selected based on community need and feasibility. To support sustainability, community members received guidance on how to manage and maintain the water sources. The project also integrated safe water handling awareness and engaged the community throughout implementation.

Impact:

Thanks to this project, 750 people now have access to safe water close to home. Health conditions have improved, time spent fetching water has been reduced significantly, and the community’s overall well-being has taken a major step forward.

Collaborative Contributions:

This project was made possible through the generous financial support of Ethio-Gulf and Pro-Development Network (PDN). As a full member of PDN, Give Water leveraged this partnership to coordinate efforts and ensure the effective use of resources.

The local community also played a vital role in bringing this project to life. Their in-kind contributions—valued at approximately 29,000 ETB—included labor, transportation of materials, security, and local supervision, demonstrating deep ownership and commitment to sustainability.
